Program Review Mathematics
Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide a program of study in mathematics and to assist students in their general intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth as Christian thinkers. We want students to:
- acquire mathematical knowledge and analytical ways of thinking,
- develop the ability to communicate mathematical ideas,
- mature as creative mathematicians and problem solvers, and
- ponder the connections between faith and mathematics.
Ultimately, we seek to serve others and glorify Jesus Christ by preparing scientists, teachers, scholars, and other professionals to use their mathematical gifts with competence and charity.
Program Learning Outcomes
The links below lead to information about the department's most recent assessment of student learning relative to our program learning outcomes.
As a result of what they have learned in their mathematics program, graduates in mathematics will be able to do the following:
- Core Knowledge. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the main concepts, skills, and facts of the discipline of mathematics.
- Communication. Students will be able to communicate mathematical ideas following the standard conventions of writing or speaking in the discipline.
- Creativity. Students will solve at least one non-routine problem from a mathematical journal and submit their solution for publication or present their solutions at a MAA section meeting.
- Christian Connection. Students will write a reflective paper identifying relationships between their identities as Christian and mathematicians and detailing how their thinking has changed as a result of their time at Westmont.

Curriculum Map
A curriculum map is a visual representation of the structure of program curriculum. The map charts program courses, syllabi, and assessments as they relate to the intended program learning outcomes. In other words, a curriculum map is the intellectual linkage that presents twenty plus courses as a story of learning.
Multi-year Assessment Plan
A multi-year assessment plan shows what program learning outcomes will be assessed in what years.
